Some business ideas are born in a boardroom. Mine was born in a wet basement.

When my family moved into our home in the Penn Forest area of Roanoke County, we were excited about the newer construction. What we didn't expect was discovering, the hard way, that age alone doesn't protect you from drainage disasters. Our basement flooded three times — all because of the standard, tiny flat drain covers that are used in the overwhelming majority of residential construction projects. The problem wasn't the drain itself. It was that those covers get buried under leaves and debris, and once they're blocked, water has nowhere to go.

A Problem Nobody Had Solved

I went to every local hardware store looking for a solution. I found nothing. Out of curiosity, I knocked on neighbors' doors and asked how they were dealing with the same issue. The answers ranged from blocking their basement doors entirely to duct-taping pieces of old screen doors over their drains. Homeowners everywhere were rigging makeshift workarounds for a problem that demanded a real, permanent solution.

That's when the idea hit me: a mushroom-shaped dome with a stem to anchor it in place. Simple in concept, but the engineering mattered. I partnered with a friend who had the technical expertise to create a 3D rendering, and from there it took 14 different modifications and rounds of rigorous testing to get it right. The final design delivers 8.5 times the drainage surface area of a standard flat cover — which means it stays clear and functional even when completely buried in leaves.

From Prototype to Patented Product

Getting a good idea to market is its own journey. My first real validation came from sitting down with Charlie Overstreet of Northwest Hardware, a man who has seen thousands of products come through the door and knows what homeowners actually need. His encouragement was the green light. From there, I secured a U.S. patent (Patent No. 10,113,303) and found an American manufacturer in Illinois.

Today, DrainDome is 100% American-made, and we handle all regional distribution right here from Roanoke, Virginia.
